Eldoret dating and nightlife guide

Eldoret is a university town, an athletics town and a farming town at once, and all three show up on a night out. It is high, cool and green, the crowd skews young because of the colleges, and it is cheaper than almost anywhere else of its size. Bring a jacket — people underestimate how cold the highlands get after dark.

Where to go out at night

The CBD

Compact and busy, with most of the town's clubs and bars packed into a few streets around the centre. Young, loud and inexpensive, heavily shaped by the student population. Easy to move between places on foot, which few Kenyan towns can say.

Elgon View

The quieter, more expensive side. Lounges, restaurants and hotel bars, an older and more professional crowd, and somewhere you can hear yourself think. Where to go if the CBD feels like too much.

Along the highway

Larger venues with gardens and parking sit out along the main roads, doing weekend events and live music. More of an afternoon-into-evening thing, and you will need a ride.

Near the universities

Cheap, packed in term time, and very young. Fun if that is what you want, quiet and strange out of term.

Meeting people during the day

  • Rupa Mall and Zion Mall. Where the town socialises at weekends.
  • Cafes around Elgon View. Good coffee, people sit and work, easy to talk to.
  • The running tracks and trails. Eldoret is a serious athletics town. Mornings on the trails around Iten and the surrounding hills are sociable in a way you would not expect.
  • Sports fixtures. Rugby and football both draw crowds and both are friendly.
  • The markets. Busy, cheap and full of conversation.

Meeting people online

A big student population means a lot of turnover — people arrive and leave every term. Meeting online first helps you find people who are actually around, rather than someone who is gone in six weeks.

Date ideas that work here

  • Iten and the escarpment. Forty minutes out, spectacular views over the Kerio Valley, and the home of Kenyan running.
  • Kerio Valley viewpoint. A proper day out with a dramatic payoff.
  • Kapsabet or a farm lunch. The countryside around Eldoret is genuinely beautiful and nobody makes enough of it.
  • A rugby match. Local, loud and easy company.
  • Nyama choma and a garden. Cheap, relaxed, and it fills an afternoon.

What a night out costs

  • Beer: KES 180–320
  • Cocktails: KES 400–800
  • Club entry: usually free, up to KES 400
  • Dinner for two: KES 1,200–2,500
  • Ride across town: KES 150–300

KES 1,800–3,000 covers a full night. Eldoret is the cheapest night out of the six cities here by a clear margin.

Practical tips

  • It is cold. Over 2,000 metres up. Nights drop sharply and visitors always underdress.
  • Term time transforms the town. Out of term the CBD empties.
  • Boda bodas everywhere. Cheap and quick; agree the fare first.
  • The athletics scene is real. If you run at all, it is the easiest way to meet people here.
  • Nights start earlier than Nairobi, and end earlier too.
