How to spot a fake profile

How to spot a fake profile

Most fakes give themselves away in the first two minutes if you know what to look at. None of this needs special tools.

1. Reverse image search the photos

Save a photo and drop it into Google Images or TinEye. If the same face appears on a modelling site, an Instagram account with a different name, or a stock library, you have your answer. This single check catches the majority of fakes, because building a fake profile is only cheap if the pictures are stolen.

2. Look for consistency across photos

Real people accumulate photos over time in different rooms, different light, different haircuts. Stolen sets are often all from one shoot: same background, same outfit, same day, professionally lit. A profile with six photos that look like one photoshoot is worth a second look.

3. Notice how quickly they want to move off the platform

A scam needs to get you somewhere unmoderated, fast. If the second message is a push to WhatsApp or Telegram before you have exchanged anything real, slow down. Someone genuine has no reason to be in a hurry.

4. The money question

This is the one that matters. Anyone who asks you to send money before you have met — for transport, for a deposit, for airtime, for an emergency — is running a script. It does not matter how plausible the reason sounds. A real person you have not met does not need your money in advance.

5. Ask for something specific

Ask for a photo doing something ordinary and specific: holding up three fingers, or standing next to a particular landmark. A scammer working from a stolen folder cannot produce it. Expect a change of subject.

6. Check whether the details hold together

Ask an easy local question — which side of town, which matatu route, which mall nearby. Someone who lives where they claim answers without thinking. Someone who does not will be vague or will look it up and answer a beat too late.

If you spot one

Report it and move on. Do not argue with them, and do not try to get your money back by sending more. On Goldflings, every profile you browse — including everyone listed in Nairobi — has a report link — we check every report and remove accounts that fail.
